Service Description

Turns out, there’s a whole lot more to yoga than just the stretching. Most of us first meet yoga through the poses. We stretch. We breathe. Maybe we get a little stronger, a little calmer—and occasionally manage to touch our toes or do a headstand. But according to Patanjali, asana is only one of eight limbs of yoga. So…what are the other seven, and why should we care? Join us for a weekend of getting curious about the deeper practice of yoga—its philosophy, history and, most importantly, how these ancient teachings apply to our very modern, occasionally messy lives. Patanjali describes yoga as the stilling of the changing states of the mind. You know the mind—the one replaying a conversation from three days ago, worrying about something that hasn’t happened, hanging onto something it should probably release and creating an entire fictional catastrophe while you’re simply trying to fall asleep. Apparently Patanjali knew us all to well long before our time! Saturday, November 14 | 12–3 PM Beyond the Poses: The Eight Limbs of Yoga We’ll explore Patanjali and the Yoga Sutras and introduce the Eight Limbs: Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi. We’ll also look at how yoga evolved from ancient contemplative traditions into the posture-heavy practice most of us recognize today—and discover that yoga has always been concerned with something much bigger than what we can do with our bodies. Expect conversation, history, philosophy, reflection and some “Wait…THAT’S yoga?” moments. If this all intrigues you then come back Sunday when we will be breaking down the ethical principles Yamas and Niyamas specifically. Sunday, November 15 | 12–3 PM The Practice of Being Human: Yamas + Niyamas We’ll unpack yoga’s ten ethical and personal practices and explore what Ahimsa, Satya, Asteya, Brahmacharya, Aparigraha, Saucha, Santosha, Tapas, Svadhyaya and Ishvara Pranidhana actually look like in everyday life. Think relationships. Boundaries. Truth telling. Overconsumption. Attachment. Contentment. Self-discipline. The stories we tell ourselves. Knowing when to hold on—and perhaps more importantly, when to let shit go. This isn’t about becoming a perfect yogi. It’s about noticing how you move through your life and discovering that the real practice begins when you roll up your mat. No yoga-teacher aspirations required. No philosophy degree necessary. No Sanskrit pop quiz. Come curious and prepared to expand your understanding of Yoga.
